Library Internet Use Policy

Purpose:  With the increased capabilities available for electronic forms of communication, St. Joseph Hospital must ensure that employees, physicians and others using computing facilities at St. Joseph Hospital, or under the auspices of St. Joseph Hospital, understand the circumstances in which these forms of communication are appropriate and permitted.  

A.  Library- Specific Use Guidelines 

DO NOT mark favorites, download programs to our hard-drive, change our settings, save data to our hard-drive or alter our configurations in any way.  

DO NOT utilize Internet stations in excess of 15 minutes at a time, especially if others are waiting 

DO relinquish Internet stations to others who are waiting if you are using the WWW for non-work related purposes 

DO understand that library staff, SJH/CHOC medical Staff, employees and residents, all have priority over outside users and that, in all cases, work-related uses of the Internet have priority over all non-work related uses 

DO understand that your use of the WWW may be monitored and that you may be restricted from using library WWW stations if you are found  not to be in compliance with our policies 

B.  Legal Guidelines

You must use all SJH resources in accordance with local, state and federal laws. These laws cover such areas as illegal access to computer systems, networks and files, copyright violations, and harassment issues.  

DO NOT copy and/or use software, images, music or other intellectual property unless you are certain you have the right to do so.  

DO NOT   transmit to others inappropriate images, sounds, or messages that might reasonably be considered harassing. Harassment is defined as the creation of an intimidating, hostile, or offensive working or educational environment.

 DO NOT use SJH computing resources for partisan political purposes, such as using email to circulate advertising for political candidates.  

C.    C.  Responsible use guidelines

You must use SJH systems and networks in a manner that demonstrates respect for individuals’ rights to privacy and freedom from intimidation, harassment, or interruption. 

DO NOT  display on-screen images, text, sounds or messages that could create an atmosphere of discomfort or harassment for others.  

DO NOT use SJH computing resources for non-business related purposes during your scheduled work hours. Use of SJH computing resources for non-business related purposes will be limited to after scheduled work hours or to Burlew Medical Library Web-accesses stations (as availability permits.)

DO exercise good judgement in utilizing SJH computing resources such as avoiding food or drink while working on computers.  

D.  D. Privacy/Confidentiality Guidelines

DO NOT send patient-specific information, which would allow identification of the patien over unsecured data lines.

DO NOT send SJH proprietary or strategic information over the Internet without written administrative approval.

DO NOT seek information about, browse, obtain copies of, or modify private files or passwords belonging to other people, whether at Saint Joseph Hospital, Orange or elsewhere, unless you are specifically authorized to do so by those individuals.

DO NOT attempt to access personal, departmental, medical, or any other records to which you are expressly not permitted access.

DO assume that your files or folders may be seen in the course of system or network administrative   duties. SJH may monitor user activities and access any files or information in the course of performing normal system or network maintenance, or while investigating possible policy violations.   

E.     Enforcement 

If you violate any of the SJH computer and network use policies, you may be subject to loss of access to computer resources as well as SJH disciplinary and/or legal action.
